3: If You Pay Peanuts ...

By Alan Wright FCCA

The UK's multi million pound Tourism industry could be worth even more if bosses paid their staff higher wages and treated them better, claims new research.

Low pay and poor conditions leave staff feeling demoralised and unwilling to try harder, which in turn results in many visitors being put off coming back, according to scientists at Strathclyde University.

To bolster economic performance in the tourism industry and unleash thousands of hotel workers from a vicious cycle of low pay and low education they suggest raising the National Minimum Wage by more than the rate of inflation.
